Blog Post #11: Bridge to Present  1.)  What did you find interesting about the history of the Sisters of Notre Dame? I have known many Sisters of Notre Dame throughout my life, as I went to Notre Dame Highschool. I have always found it interesting how involved in education the sisters generally are. They originated in France under St. Julie Billiart, the founder of Notre Dame De Nemur. The sisters also taught as teachers at Notre dame highschool, and boarded in the now demolished convent on campus. Sr. Dorothy Stang is one of the most inspiring sisters I know because she put her life at risk in order to help perserve the rainforests of Brazil and all of the people who lived there, and died for her passion. 2.) Blog Post 10 Growth   Which event that you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why? The event that I found most interesting while learning about Church history was the Crusades. These events lasted between 1 095 – 1291, or the medieval period in Europe.  The significance of the Crusades period was that it was a period in which the Latin Church aimed to restore Christianity to places that had been overthrown by the Moors, or Muslim people or Jews. However, the Church went about converting others in violent ways. People who practices religions other than Christianity in Europe were burned at the stake, imprisoned, and charged for heresy. I find this interesting because I wander what it must have been like for people in the Church who did not believe in violence but took part in it anyway. Blog Post # 9 Resilience Could you ever see yourself sharing similar messages that your Letter Writer did? Why or why not? How would you share them? I could definately see myself sharig the messages that Paul the Apostle shared with people. His messages were focused on the idea of suffering. I think that it is important to suffer in order to understand the true meaning of life. Everyone suffers in their own way. Today, people suffer from hunger, descrimination, substance addiction, dealing with loss, or self identity issues. Being part of the femenist club, I already help to spread awareness for suffering surrounding women. Some ways that I do this is by participating in women's marches, and living everyday with the intention of educating someone on these issues. 2. Blog Post #8 Suffering In what ways did the people you learned about during this unit suffer? What was their reaction to their suffering? In the story of the Apostles Heal Many Acts 5: 12-41, Peter and other Apostles were imprisoned by a high priest for performing miracles on other people, which challenged the priest's authority and lead to their imprisonment. Imagine spreading the word of God as God would want you to and the be punished for this. Personally, my faith would definitely be tested, and being imprisoned in itself is psychologically challenging. In the story, if Lystra and Derbe, Paul the Apostle helped a crippled man walk with the power of God, but was confused by people for an actual god. Paul explained to the people that he was only a man with extraordinary powers given to him by God, but the people grew distraught and stoned him. Sophia Bouzid's Discipleship Blogpost:) I chose this image of a man climbing up a mountain because to me, it resembles the persistence, strength, and courage of the Apostles. It took courage to openly follow and love Jesus when he was alive to protect them, but it took immense strength to continue spreading Jesus' message after his death. What did you learn about the original disciples from the group projects? I learned that the original disciples share multiple commonalities and even some biological relations. For example, the apostles Paul and Andrew were brothers in real life. The apostles Jude, James the Lesser, and John were all supposedly related through the Virgin Mary, and were thought to be cousins. I also learned that all the apostles died violent deaths as martyrs except for John the Apostle, who died of old age in 100 A.D., in Patmos, Greece.
